Heinlein and the Professionals of Early LA Science Fiction
Room Huntington ABC at 12:00 PM PDT on Thursday, August 27, 2026

Glen Olson, Terry Brussel-Roger’s co-author of Fifty Years of Polyamory in America: A Guided Tour of a Growing Movement, moderates this panel, which includes Terry Brussel-Rogers.

Los Angeles in the 1930s and 1940s wasn’t just a hub of fandom, it was a magnet for prominent SF professionals whose work helped define the Golden Age. This program focuses on Robert A. Heinlein, whose move to LA immersed him in local fandom and war-era research culture, and the meetings of his Mañana Literary Society. It will also highlight the editors, illustrators, and pulp authors who made SoCal a pressure point for modern SF. Questions and comments on Heinlein’s later books on polyamory are welcome.

Heinlein wrote For Us The Living in 1938, though it wasn’t published until 2003. It had plenty of poly oriented material in it long before the word was coined. It also contains fascinating bits which later became full novels prominently portraying the concept of multiply committed relationships, group marriage and group living.

Is Fandom Really Egalitarian?
Room 263 A at 10:30 AM PDT on Monday, August 31, 2026
Terry Brussel-Rogers is moderating.

Egalitarianism is an ideal fandom aspires to, where fan spaces are open to everyone and everyone is an equal. Yet, we all know fandom often misses that mark. Panelists will discuss the unequal realities within fandom, and steps we can all take to make these spaces into more equal and welcoming places.

Saturday Open Filk
Room San Simeon A starting at 9:00 PM PDT on Saturday, August 29, 2026

Filk music started out with people getting together in a circle in some random place at a convention to swap songs. We’re official now and in a larger space, but it’s still the same supportive tradition of sharing music together late into the night. All voices, instruments, and styles including a cappella are welcome! Come by to sing or to listen!
