SUMMARY:Is Fandom Really Egalitarian?
DESCRIPTION:This LAcon V panel discussion will be held in room 263A of the Anaheim Convention Center North. \nEgalitarianism is an ideal fandom aspires to\, where fan spaces are open to everyone and everyone is an equal. Yet\, we all know fandom often misses that mark. Panelists will discuss the unequal realities within fandom\, and steps we can all take to make these spaces into more equal and welcoming places.

SUMMARY:Heinlein and the Professionals of Early LA Science Fiction
DESCRIPTION:This LAcon V panel discussion will be held in the Palos Verdes room of the Anaheim Hilton. \nGlen Olson\, Terry Brussel-Roger’s co-author of Fifty Years of Polyamory in America: A Guided Tour of a Growing Movement\, moderates this panel\, which includes Terry Brussel-Rogers. \nLos Angeles in the 1930s and 1940s wasn’t just a hub of fandom\, it was a magnet for prominent SF professionals whose work helped define the Golden Age. This program focuses on Robert A. Heinlein\, whose move to LA immersed him in local fandom and war-era research culture\, and the meetings of his Mañana Literary Society. It will also highlight the editors\, illustrators\, and pulp authors who made SoCal a pressure point for modern SF. Questions and comments on Heinlein’s later books on polyamory are welcome. \nHeinlein wrote For Us The Living in 1938\, though it wasn’t published until 2003. It had plenty of poly oriented material in it long before the word was coined. It also contains fascinating bits which later became full novels prominently portraying the concept of multiply committed relationships\, group marriage and group living.

SUMMARY:Loscon 49 Panel: When We Get to Space\, What Will Family Look Like?
DESCRIPTION:Individuals may explore space but it will take families to settle there\nJoin us for a Panel at Loscon* 49: an SF and Fantasy convention held every Thanksgiving weekend!\nLive Only Friday\, November 25th from 10 am to 11:30 am\nModerators: Glen Olson and Terry Brussel-Rogers\nSpecial Guest: Oberon Zell-Ravenhart\, founder of the real-life Church of All Worlds based on the one in Heinlein’s Stranger\nin a Strange Land\, the first legally recognized Neo-Pagan religion in the United States\nLocation: LAX Marriott | 5855 W Century Blvd Los Angeles\, 90045 \nRoom: Los Angeles 3 \n\n\n\nIndividuals may explore space but it will take families to settle there. People have always relied on Family for survival and for Joy when settling new environments. Humans will need Family even more as they leave Mother Earth for the stars. Many of our best SF and fantasy authors have tackled the question of how we are going to do it. People will have to get there in spaceships where they must get along with their shipmates over long periods of time to get where they are going. \nThe damage jealousy (leading to murder) can do in such a situation is shown at the beginning of Robert A. Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land. In The Rolling Stones\, Heinlein shows us three generations of family embarked on an exploration of the solar system and he introduces us to multigenerational Line Marriage in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Marion Zimmer Bradley’s colonists on Darkover and Spider Robinson’s writings show us more options including telepathic group marriage. \nThis panel explores how Family will look as Space Travel and the possibility of children growing up on space stations\, the moon\, other planets\, or even under other stars becomes more and more a real possibility for the children and grandchildren of people living today.\n\n\n\n\n\n*Loscon 49 membership is required to attend the panel.\nIf you have not already purchased a Loscon 49 membership\, please do so at the door.\nPrices are as follows for full-weekend badges: Adults (13 and up) – $75.00\, Children (6 – 12) – $25\, Kid-in-Tow (<6) – Free\nLearn more about this year’s Loscon below:\n\nHome Page\nGuests of Honor\nHotel – Book your room\nSchedule (Downloadable PDF version)\nArt Show\nBlood Drive\nDealer’s Room\nMasquerade\nClassics of Science Fiction\nNEW! Volunteers\nCovid Policy\nContact our Staff\nPress Releases\n\n\nIf you haven’t already done so\, make sure to check out this month’s LTD newsletter.
