Tell us about yours!\nLine Marriage: Multi-Generational Group Marriage\, triads\, and other unusual alternatives are described in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. While some of the choices made in this example are influenced by the lack of females compared with males on Luna\, some excellent examples of “different kinds of family” are offered here.  \nTime Enough for Love’s Tersius colony Family features a large group marriage 2000 years in our future consisting of many of our favorite characters from Heinlein’s other stories. Their only absolute for being part of this marriage is that all adults pledge to support and to bring up with love (until the age of maturity) all children produced by the ladies in the marriage already born or in the womb (at the time of the marriage)—whoever put those babies in their wombs\, co spice or not! This is happening on a planet where the government would not think of interfering in one’s marital choices and only your very advanced geneticist gets a vote on whom you make babies with. \nThe water-sharing ceremony in Stranger In a Strange Land is the best example of Family by Choice and has affected families in reality\, probably more than any other of his books. Church of All Worlds and many other less formal groups\, including my own intimate friendship network\, have used this as a model for permanent committed relationships which may shift from lovers to friends and back again multiple times during an ongoing relationship. Members of a Nest may live together or be “semi-residential.”  They may live nowhere near each other\, but maintain their bonds through phone calls and in-person visits (weekly\, monthly\, or perhaps a few times a year). The patterns are endless. \nThe common denominator is long-term loving commitment. Some of these relationships (including in our own Nest) have lasted 30-50 years and are not uncommon. Which science fiction writings most affected the choices YOU have made regarding family and relationship structure? Just talked to a friend involved in SCA—meetings in parks are going strong and attracting hundreds. They are not social distancing as they reenact the time before the Renaissance. BDSM and LGBTQ groups are meeting in restaurants. Nudist venues have indoor /outdoor events with plenty of hugging. I looked for a Poly gathering to promote our 35th anniversary celebration—NOTHING was going on live! In LA! Is this the way we want to live in the future? Has COVID brought a future of virtual contact replacing touch into reality much sooner than we expected…? Why more in the poly community than in related communities? Tell us about yours! \nLine Marriage: Multi-Generational Group Marriage\, triads and other unusual alternatives are described in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. While some of the choices made in this example are influenced by the lack of females compared with males on Luna\, some excellent examples “different kind of family” are offered here. Time Enough for Love’s Tersius colony Family features a large group marriage consisting of many of our favorite characters from Heinlein’s other stories. Their only absolute for being part of this marriage is that all adults pledge to support and to bring up with love all children produced by the Ladies in the marriage already born or in the womb— whoever put those babies in their wombs\, co spice or not! This is happening on a planet where the government wouldn’t think of interfering in one’s marital choices and only your very advanced geneticist gets a vote on whom you make babies with. The water sharing ceremony in Stranger In a Strange Land is the best example of Family by choice and has effected families in reality probably more than any other of his books. Church of All Worlds and many other less formal groups including my own intimate friendship network have used this as a model for permanent committed relationships which may shift from lovers to friendship and back again multiple times during an ongoing relationship. Members of a Nest may live together or be “semi residential”. They may live nowhere near each other\, but maintain their bonds through phone calls and visits (weekly\, monthly\, or perhaps a few times a year). The patterns are endless. The common denominator is long term loving commitment. \nWhich science fiction writings most affected the choices YOU have made regarding family and relationship structure? \nDid you discover it’s possible to love more than one significant other by identifying with Michael and Jill and their NEST of water brothers from Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land? Did Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Forbidden Tower make you wonder if group marriage could work for you? Did Spider Robinson’s Star Dancers make you yearn to go beyond even that into the kind of group relationship possible for those connected in heart\, mind and spirit? Many of us either built a lifestyle using a science fiction book as a model and/or got valuable ideas about working rules for human relationships by reading stories not limited by the present time line’s social prejudices and limitations. This event is for those already in multiply committed relationships and those who want to learn more about them. In this and later books they go beyond this to actual group telepathic communication. In Callahan’s Keys they show their commitment to each other by all moving out of state together when local laws and the abuse of them prevented them from meeting together where they were. According to Spider’s biographical material\, many of the metaphysical as well as the group related experiences come from his real-life ones with his expanded family and close friends during the ‘60 s in Haight Ashbury. \nThe Lady Callahan books are definitely Poly as committed couples share their partners’ with customers of this high class brothel/international diplomacy center. The “artists” who work there have relationships with the Lady herself\, other artists (some of which include legal marriage)\, etc. Lady Callahan’s place could itself be considered group house since the artists and some of their partners actually do live there. Spider’s Star Dance series features very unusually configured group marriages — combining extra-terrestrials with humans\, gays with straights who share mental “intercourse” etc. Eventually his proposed intentional Family includes the whole human race\, past\, present and future. Spider has written many other stories with incidental poly themes in fictional (?) worlds where it is assumed any choice of whom and how many you love is OK. He has been called the new Heinlein by many. They discovered they wanted more from a relationship than the sex alone could give them. Others may straddle both worlds as they attend poly gatherings and “permissive” parties. Hopefully these folks have read Bouquet of Lovers (please see full article on the CAW website  ) and practice safe sex! \nAt LifeStyles Conventions given by Wide World of Swingers\, Hospitality was handled by a group of people who had known each other over many conventions. They had worked closely together on all the details of making a big convention successful for those giving it and those attending it. Some may have originally met at one of those parties which were frankly Swing parties\, had sex and not asked their partner’s name. After working together for years\, going to each other’s weddings and kids Bar Mitzvahs as well as social gatherings of all kinds for holidays\, etc. any love making they do with each other is no longer casual and is certainly not anonymous. \nEven if they still call themselves swingers\, they are probably poly by most definitions. SUMMARY:Poly Progress: Is Legalized Group Marriage Ahead?
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years progress has been made in terms of legal standing of those who live a poly life style. Visiting rights for poly partners who have helped raise a child they no longer live with is one such milestone. Another is protection (at least in San Francisco!) against job discrimination based on lifestyle—Gay\, Poly\, etc. \nA child can’t be removed from the home of a mother or father who chooses to be in a triad or larger group marriage unless harm to the child is actually proven in court in some jurisdictions in the US and certainly in other parts of the world. We have had people show up at Live the Dream meetings who actually had three or four mothers (though generally one father) from Africa and other countries. Where they came from\, this was not unusual.   We will also discuss Robert Rimmer’s Proposition 31\, published 1968. It is speculative fiction about how legislation legalizing group marriage might be passed through our political process-one of his best “couple meet couple\, they fall in love\, get married and raise kids together” stories. \nWhat would it take to speed the legalization of group marriage in the US? Let’s brainstorm it!

SUMMARY:Poly Oriented Novels By Ursula Le Guin

Le Guin\, aged 88.  Ms. Le Guin was a highly respected author who changed the nature of science fiction and fantasy\, blurring the boundary between them\, through her innovative exploration of human (and nonhuman) nature in extraordinary settings. \nHer story\, A Fisherman of the Inland Sea\, found in the collection of the same title\, describes a world where most marriages are a “sedoretu” of two couples\, which may be expanded to include up to 8 participants.  There are rules about who in a marriage is expected to have sex with whom\, and who may not\, as society is divided into two halves (“moieties”) to prevent inbreeding. This is clearly a form of polyamory\, although with additional restrictions. \nThe Left Hand of Darkness is one of Ms. Le Guin’s best known works\, which influenced the conversation and direction of feminism when it was published.  It is set in a cold world where the population is ambisexual: most days of the month an individual is essentially sexless\, but for a few days a month a person may become & mate as either female or male.  Thus\, a person can be both a father and a mother; gender roles are fluid.  The story has been criticized as overly masculine\, a position to which Ms. Le Guin eventually conceded\, leading her to write the stories “Winter’s King” and “Coming of Age in Karhide” as more feminized counterpoints. \n“The Matter of Seggri”\, winner of the James Tiptree Jr. Award in 1994\, explores a world in which women are plentiful and males are rare.  In this society\, gender roles are very different than those of our current\, Western world. \nThe study of these stories is a worthwhile exploration of the author’s vision of alternative lifestyles and genders.  The study of the study of these stories is a worthwhile exploration of our society’s changing views on gender and sex. \n2-4 pm Socialize in the clothing optional Hot tub.
