While some of the choices made in this example are influenced by the lack of females compared with males on Luna\, some excellent examples of “different kinds of family” are offered here.  \nTime Enough for Love’s Tersius colony Family features a large group marriage 2000 years in our future consisting of many of our favorite characters from Heinlein’s other stories. Their only absolute for being part of this marriage is that all adults pledge to support and to bring up with love (until the age of maturity) all children produced by the ladies in the marriage already born or in the womb (at the time of the marriage)—whoever put those babies in their wombs\, co spice or not! This is happening on a planet where the government would not think of interfering in one’s marital choices and only your very advanced geneticist gets a vote on whom you make babies with. \nThe water-sharing ceremony in Stranger In a Strange Land is the best example of Family by Choice and has affected families in reality\, probably more than any other of his books. Church of All Worlds and many other less formal groups\, including my own intimate friendship network\, have used this as a model for permanent committed relationships which may shift from lovers to friends and back again multiple times during an ongoing relationship. Members of a Nest may live together or be “semi-residential.”  They may live nowhere near each other\, but maintain their bonds through phone calls and in-person visits (weekly\, monthly\, or perhaps a few times a year). The patterns are endless. \nThe common denominator is long-term loving commitment. Some of these relationships (including in our own Nest) have lasted 30-50 years and are not uncommon. Your input appreciated! \nWhy are business mixers going strong with participants swarming to them in locations indoor and out\, then standing much closer than 6 feet apart while transacting business while the poly community has all but stopped live meetings and even the Cuddle groups are doing it on Zoom? Just talked to a friend involved in SCA—meetings in parks are going strong and attracting hundreds. They are not social distancing as they reenact the time before the Renaissance. BDSM and LGBTQ groups are meeting in restaurants. Nudist venues have indoor /outdoor events with plenty of hugging. I looked for a Poly gathering to promote our 35th anniversary celebration—NOTHING was going on live! In LA! Is this the way we want to live in the future? Has COVID brought a future of virtual contact replacing touch into reality much sooner than we expected…? Why more in the poly community than in related communities? There are\, of course\, plenty of people isolating among the mundanes for reasons ranging from health to phobias. It may be safer to stay away from people as far as not getting COVID is concerned\, but lack of touch has its own negative physical and emotional results. COVID isolation is becoming a syndrome in itself. As a hypnotherapist\, I am helping my clients deal with it in various forms from depression to hives. \nGood thing I pioneered telephone hypnotherapy in 1995! I just did not realize how isolated our own poly community had become. He shares how the book relates to polyamory and the founding of CAW. Oberon and Morning Glory Zell were married 40 years until her passing on May 13\, 2014—all of it Poly though they did not create the word for it until 1991. Oberon’s personal experiences with this lifestyle also include the triad of Morning Glory\, Oberon and Diane and the 7-person Ravenhart group marriage\, each of which lasted 10 years as live in and continue as an expanded family to this day. \n12 pm to 1 pm Glen Olson and Terry Brussel-Rogers authors of Fifty Years of Polyamory in America: A Guided Tour to a Growing Movement being published November 11 2022 by Rowman and Littlefield (We may have books available at this meeting!). Many women found themselves unable to bear children on the new world. This resulted in a society where a fertile woman having more than one child by the same man was considered a kind of selfishness. Group marriage became the norm and ties of fosterage frequently stronger than ties of blood…Marion and many new writers as well as successful professional writers have chosen to create stories in the Dark Over universe dealing with the alternative lifestyle of multiply committed relationships. We’ll focus on “SPELL SWORD” and “FORBIDDEN TOWER”\, two novels based on a real life two couple group marriage which lasted 16 years! \n1 pm Pot Luck Lunch-Bring something healthy and delicious to share\n2 – 4 pm Socializing in Clothing Optional Hot tub. \nFilk follows the meeting. DESCRIPTION:We will discuss chosen families in real and fictional life. Tell us about yours! \nLine Marriage: Multi-Generational Group Marriage\, triads and other unusual alternatives are described in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. While some of the choices made in this example are influenced by the lack of females compared with males on Luna\, some excellent examples “different kind of family” are offered here. Time Enough for Love’s Tersius colony Family features a large group marriage consisting of many of our favorite characters from Heinlein’s other stories. Their only absolute for being part of this marriage is that all adults pledge to support and to bring up with love all children produced by the Ladies in the marriage already born or in the womb— whoever put those babies in their wombs\, co spice or not! This is happening on a planet where the government wouldn’t think of interfering in one’s marital choices and only your very advanced geneticist gets a vote on whom you make babies with. The water sharing ceremony in Stranger In a Strange Land is the best example of Family by choice and has effected families in reality probably more than any other of his books. Church of All Worlds and many other less formal groups including my own intimate friendship network have used this as a model for permanent committed relationships which may shift from lovers to friendship and back again multiple times during an ongoing relationship. Members of a Nest may live together or be “semi residential”. They may live nowhere near each other\, but maintain their bonds through phone calls and visits (weekly\, monthly\, or perhaps a few times a year). The patterns are endless. The common denominator is long term loving commitment. \nWhich science fiction writings most affected the choices YOU have made regarding family and relationship structure? \nDid you discover it’s possible to love more than one significant other by identifying with Michael and Jill and their NEST of water brothers from Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land? Did Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Forbidden Tower make you wonder if group marriage could work for you? Did Spider Robinson’s Star Dancers make you yearn to go beyond even that into the kind of group relationship possible for those connected in heart\, mind and spirit? Many of us either built a lifestyle using a science fiction book as a model and/or got valuable ideas about working rules for human relationships by reading stories not limited by the present time line’s social prejudices and limitations. This event is for those already in multiply committed relationships and those who want to learn more about them. SUMMARY:Spider Robinson’s Poly Primers
DESCRIPTION:Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon introduces a group of people who support each other in handling their problems and celebrating their joys. In this and later books they go beyond this to actual group telepathic communication. In Callahan’s Keys they show their commitment to each other by all moving out-of- state together when local laws and the abuse of them prevented them from meeting together where they were. According to Spider’s biographical material\, many of the metaphysical as well as the group related experiences come from his real-life ones with his expanded family and close friends in ‘60s in Haight Ashbury. \nThe Lady Callahan books are definitely Poly as committed couples share their partners’ with customers of this high class brothel/ international diplomacy center. The “artists” who work there have relationships with the Lady herself other artists (some of which include legal marriage)\, etc. Lady Callahan’s place could itself be considered a group house since the artists and some of their partners actually do live there. Spider’s Star Dance series features very unusually configured group marriages— combining extra-terrestrials with humans\, gays with straights who share mental “intercourse” etc. Eventually his proposed intentional Family includes the whole human race past\, present and future. Spider has written many other stories with incidental poly themes in fictional (?) worlds where it is assumed any choice of whom and how many you love is OK. How can we use this information in our own group living and multiple committed relationship efforts?\nFilk Sing follows at same location with pot luck dinner at 6 pm. It is extremely well-written and well-acted. It is run by one of them whose wife is his partner in managing the resort. I expected light comedy but found Pathos instead—serious drama with nuggets of laughter. The “girls”\, as they call themselves\, express their inner women in ways which strike me more as transgender than simply crossdressing. The conflict spins around whether they should become more public with their “Sorority” and whether these mainly heterosexual men should publicly disavow any connection with homosexuality. This takes place in a time when crossdressing or (Heavens!) homosexuality could cost a man his career\, or even a well-earned pension. \nShould polyamorists make sure “everyone knows” we are not into BDSM or swinging? Should nudists disavow any interest in alternative sexuality? Is it appropriate for homosexuals and Lesbians to attend poly gatherings? Is bisexuality ok in Poly or Gay groups? All of these topics have been brought up at poly organization board meetings\, informal hot tub discussions\, etc. Where do YOU stand on who you are and with whom you identify?

We will discuss not only the ceremonies themselves\, but the promises being made and the effect of the future of the relationships being committed to. In the real world\, the Church of all Worlds\, Loving More and others have created such vows & ceremonies for current use.
