DESCRIPTION:Dragon Riders of (Poly) Pern by Anne McCaffery\nZoom 11 am to 1 pm | Live 11 am to 4 pm\nLed by Mark Merlino and Rod O’Reilley\, founders of “Furry Fandom” and of The Prancing Skiltare\, a group house spanning decades!\nThey have been in an open committed relationship (which has often included long-term lovers/ housemates) for 34 years. \nWhile Science Fiction inspires this meeting\, the intent of presenting it is to learn how to use it in our own poly lives. \nYES\, you can attend and enjoy the meeting without having read the books! \nAnne’s original stories were poly oriented simply by featuring characters bonded emotionally for life to sentient telepathic dragons. Many of these Dragon Riders were also bonded to human mates with whom they shared romantic and physically sexual connections. Anne’s son and daughter have written their own books in that universe which could actually be considered Poly Primers describing different ways of creating and maintaining multiple committed relationships with human partners. \nIn a world protected from life-destroying spores by genetically engineered fire-breathing dragons bonded at their hatching to empathic human dragon riders\, the social structure is an unusual one. Queen dragons are ridden by women\, Browns and Bronzes by males. However\, males\, as well as females\, can bond with and ride female fire-breathing green dragons. When a rider’s dragon makes her mating flight\, the passions of their dragons cause the riders to mate in their own way. In the Weyr caves which house dragons and their riders\, sexual mores are different from those on the rest of the planet of Pern since dragons may not honor the current romantic commitments of their riders when mating. Since the Weyrs are group living arrangements in any case\, children resulting from such liaisons are raised by the “village” with a foster mother and/or father doing the primary parenting. \nHappy St. Patrick’s Day! \n\n1pm | Potluck Lunch – Corn beef and cabbage provided by your host and hostess. Church of All Worlds and many other less formal groups\, including my own intimate friendship network\, have used this as a model for permanent committed relationships which may shift from lovers to friends and back again multiple times during an ongoing relationship. Members of a Nest may live together or be “semi-residential.”  They may live nowhere near each other\, but maintain their bonds through phone calls and in-person visits (weekly\, monthly\, or perhaps a few times a year). The patterns are endless. \nThe common denominator is long-term loving commitment. Some of these relationships (including in our own Nest) have lasted 30-50 years and are not uncommon. Your input appreciated! \nWhy are business mixers going strong with participants swarming to them in locations indoor and out\, then standing much closer than 6 feet apart while transacting business while the poly community has all but stopped live meetings and even the Cuddle groups are doing it on Zoom? Just talked to a friend involved in SCA—meetings in parks are going strong and attracting hundreds. They are not social distancing as they reenact the time before the Renaissance. BDSM and LGBTQ groups are meeting in restaurants. Nudist venues have indoor /outdoor events with plenty of hugging. I looked for a Poly gathering to promote our 35th anniversary celebration—NOTHING was going on live! In LA! Is this the way we want to live in the future? Has COVID brought a future of virtual contact replacing touch into reality much sooner than we expected…? Why more in the poly community than in related communities? There are\, of course\, plenty of people isolating among the mundanes for reasons ranging from health to phobias. It may be safer to stay away from people as far as not getting COVID is concerned\, but lack of touch has its own negative physical and emotional results. COVID isolation is becoming a syndrome in itself. Oberon Zell\, founder of Church of All Worlds based on Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land\, has been poly all his adult life\, too. In 1967 he was first to claim the identity of “Pagan\,” incorporating the first Pagan Church of All Worlds in 1968. Publishing Green Egg magazine over more than 50 years\, he was instrumental in the coalescence of the modern Pagan movement. In 1970\, he published the earliest version of “The Gaea Thesis.” In the 1980s\, Oberon and his wife Morning Glory resurrected authentic living Unicorns. For half of their 40 years together they were in group marriages. In 1990\, they coined the term “polyamory\,” thus launching another movement. Sadly\, MG died of cancer in 2014.
