SUMMARY:Spider Robinson’s Poly Primers
DESCRIPTION:Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon introduces a group of people who support each other in handling their problems and celebrating their joys. In this and later books they go beyond this to actual group telepathic communication. In Callahan’s Keys they show their commitment to each other by all moving out-of- state together when local laws and the abuse of them prevented them from meeting together where they were. According to Spider’s biographical material\, many of the metaphysical as well as the group related experiences come from his real-life ones with his expanded family and close friends in ‘60s in Haight Ashbury. \nThe Lady Callahan books are definitely Poly as committed couples share their partners’ with customers of this high class brothel/ international diplomacy center. The “artists” who work there have relationships with the Lady herself other artists (some of which include legal marriage)\, etc. Lady Callahan’s place could itself be considered a group house since the artists and some of their partners actually do live there. Spider’s Star Dance series features very unusually configured group marriages— combining extra-terrestrials with humans\, gays with straights who share mental “intercourse” etc. Eventually his proposed intentional Family includes the whole human race past\, present and future. Spider has written many other stories with incidental poly themes in fictional (?) worlds where it is assumed any choice of whom and how many you love is OK. It is extremely well-written and well-acted. It is run by one of them whose wife is his partner in managing the resort. I expected light comedy but found Pathos instead—serious drama with nuggets of laughter. The “girls”\, as they call themselves\, express their inner women in ways which strike me more as transgender than simply crossdressing. The conflict spins around whether they should become more public with their “Sorority” and whether these mainly heterosexual men should publicly disavow any connection with homosexuality. This takes place in a time when crossdressing or (Heavens!) homosexuality could cost a man his career\, or even a well-earned pension. \nShould polyamorists make sure “everyone knows” we are not into BDSM or swinging? Should nudists disavow any interest in alternative sexuality? Is it appropriate for homosexuals and Lesbians to attend poly gatherings? Is bisexuality ok in Poly or Gay groups? All of these topics have been brought up at poly organization board meetings\, informal hot tub discussions\, etc. Where do YOU stand on who you are and with whom you identify?

Sixty now\, he has been poly all his adult life. He also attended his share of swing parties… He will be happy to answer any of your questions on the poly lifestyle. \nSome poly people are former or “evolved” swingers. (YOU may even be at such a point in your life as a swinger.) Others may straddle both worlds as they attend poly gatherings and “permissive” parties. At LifeStyles Conventions given by Wide World of Swingers from the 70s until 2011\, hospitality was handled by a group of people who had known each other over many conventions. They had worked closely together on all the details of making a big convention successful for those giving it and those attending it. Some may have originally met at one of those parties which were frankly Swing parties\, had sex and not asked their partner’s name. After working together for years\, going to each other’s weddings and kids Bar Mitzvahs as well as social gatherings of all kinds for holidays\, etc. any love making they do with each other is no longer casual and is certainly not anonymous. Even if they still call themselves swingers\, they are probably poly by most definitions. Can going to swing parties be one way to introduce people to the poly life style while looking for potential love partners who may not yet know they are poly? Surprise! Some swingers think they are monogamous because they have sex but not LOVE with people at swing parties. That is why you might need the “I’m in a poly relationship” conversation as much with one of them as with someone who you (in an open committed relationship or even looking to be in one) are attracted to who has never stepped outside of monogamy.

DESCRIPTION:Led by Dreena Grace\, avid SF fan who has been reading the Pern books since they came out. In a world protected from life destroying spores by genetically engineered fire breathing dragons bonded at their hatching to empathic human dragon riders\, the social structure is an unusual one. Queen dragons are ridden by women\, Browns and Bronzes by males. However\, males as well as females can bond with and ride female fire breathing green dragons. When a rider’s dragon makes her mating flight\, the passions of their dragons causes the riders to mate in their own way. In the Weyr caves which house dragons and their riders\, sexual mores are different from those on the rest of the planet of Pern since dragons may not honor the current romantic commitments of their riders when mating. Since the Weyrs are group living arrangements in any case\, children resulting from such liaisons are raised by the “village” with a foster mother and/or father doing the primary parenting. \n1 pm Pot luck lunch—corn beef and cabbage provided by your host and hostess. Spider has written many other stories with incidental poly themes in fictional (?) worlds where it is assumed any choice of whom and how many you love is OK. SUMMARY:Poly Progress: Is Legalized Group Marriage Ahead?
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years progress has been made in terms of legal standing of those who live a poly life style. Visiting rights for poly partners who have helped raise a child they no longer live with is one such milestone. Another is protection (at least in San Francisco!) against job discrimination based on lifestyle—Gay\, Poly\, etc. \nA child can’t be removed from the home of a mother or father who chooses to be in a triad or larger group marriage unless harm to the child is actually proven in court in some jurisdictions in the US and certainly in other parts of the world. We have had people show up at Live the Dream meetings who actually had three or four mothers (though generally one father) from Africa and other countries. Where they came from\, this was not unusual.   We will also discuss Robert Rimmer’s Proposition 31\, published 1968. It is speculative fiction about how legislation legalizing group marriage might be passed through our political process-one of his best “couple meet couple\, they fall in love\, get married and raise kids together” stories. \nWhat would it take to speed the legalization of group marriage in the US? Let’s brainstorm it!

DESCRIPTION:Happy St Patrick’s Day!   Pot Luck Lunch(1pm): LTD provides corn beef and cabbage + Irish Music to enjoy it by.  Bring healthy side dishes and desserts to share. \nWe note the passing this year of Ursula K. Le Guin\, aged 88.  Ms. Le Guin was a highly respected author who changed the nature of science fiction and fantasy\, blurring the boundary between them\, through her innovative exploration of human (and nonhuman) nature in extraordinary settings. \nHer story\, A Fisherman of the Inland Sea\, found in the collection of the same title\, describes a world where most marriages are a “sedoretu” of two couples\, which may be expanded to include up to 8 participants.  There are rules about who in a marriage is expected to have sex with whom\, and who may not\, as society is divided into two halves (“moieties”) to prevent inbreeding. This is clearly a form of polyamory\, although with additional restrictions. \nThe Left Hand of Darkness is one of Ms. Le Guin’s best known works\, which influenced the conversation and direction of feminism when it was published.  It is set in a cold world where the population is ambisexual: most days of the month an individual is essentially sexless\, but for a few days a month a person may become & mate as either female or male.  Thus\, a person can be both a father and a mother; gender roles are fluid.  The story has been criticized as overly masculine\, a position to which Ms. Le Guin eventually conceded\, leading her to write the stories “Winter’s King” and “Coming of Age in Karhide” as more feminized counterpoints. \n“The Matter of Seggri”\, winner of the James Tiptree Jr. Award in 1994\, explores a world in which women are plentiful and males are rare.  In this society\, gender roles are very different than those of our current\, Western world. \nThe study of these stories is a worthwhile exploration of the author’s vision of alternative lifestyles and genders.  The study of the study of these stories is a worthwhile exploration of our society’s changing views on gender and sex. \n2-4 pm Socialize in the clothing optional Hot tub. Principles of respect for persons and property and commitment to duty and honoring the dignity of competence were described at length in many of his books\, including Starship Troopers\, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Stranger in a Strange Land. \nMany people believe Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers are complete opposites. Heinlein himself stated that if a reader did not get it that both of these books are about the same thing\, they have completely missed the point of all of his writings. Both these books and Moon is a Harsh Mistress are about personal responsibility for the state of your own life\, the happiness of those you care for\, and the safety and freedom of the village (or the planet) in which you live. This includes the government we choose and the lifestyles we live. \nScience fiction has been consistently pointing the way to the future in science\, technology\, and politics. Heinlein and others made considerable inroads into other areas of life and philosophy. What inferences can we make from the questions posed in these works of fiction that can serve us today and into the future? Ayn Rand herself lived an alternative lifestyle\, though perhaps in a way which would not be considered ethical polyamory today—how would it have affected the story if her characters were poly? Liberty advocates who want the freedom to act in their own best interest while maintaining the desire to see others restricted in their ability to do the same (short of actual harm) because those others might do something the “liberty advocates” disapprove of are not really serving the cause of liberty. Is it true that liberty best serves the needs of humanity?
